Singing In The Rain
I always felt disconnected to who I am as Amskapi Piikani (Blackfeet). A part of my learning process was mimicking what I seen other artists in that community doing with symbolism. I'm finally starting to find my voice and personal testimony within the culture. During Sundance this year it started to rain during the 4-day ceremony. This is my second year participating as a community member. The first day I was on the sidelines when my cousin Johnny waved me over to the drum group. I sat down on Cold Cuts blanket and grabbed a practicing stick in the center of the Buffalo robe. I'm super shy and very soft spoken, but once I close my eyes the medicine took over. We sang through the rain until the hand drums sounded like cardboard. The dancers kept their commitment and vow finding their place on the center pole. Acrylic, sharpie, coffee, twine.
